The big flat pantile shapes that went onto these estates are tough but not permanent. The surface laitance weathers off, so the tile turns porous and holds moss, and the nails and clips corrode until tiles creep down the batten. Not all of it is post-war. Around St Paul's at Peel and the lanes towards Wharton and Rothwell Lane there are Victorian and Edwardian cottages under slate, and slate fails differently. The slate has decades left but the nails rust and it slides, which is why a roof looks fine apart from two or three gaps.
