The first ten minutes, before anybody arrives
Get a bucket under the drip and move what you can out of the way. If water is anywhere near a light fitting or a socket, turn that circuit off at the consumer unit before you touch anything else. A sagging ceiling is holding water, and a bulge that lets go on its own empties all at once, so once the power is off, stand to one side, pierce the lowest point and let it drain into a bin. That feels like the wrong thing to do and it is the right one. Then leave the outside alone: no ladder in wind, no climbing on the roof, no unboarded loft in the dark.
Making safe first, diagnosing second
Our first job is to stop water getting in, not to work out why it got in. Those are two visits and we would rather say so. A roof in the rain tells you little: the wet is everywhere, the covering cannot be lifted without letting more in, and anything fixed then is fixed blind. So we make it watertight by the soundest method the weather allows, then come back when the roof is dry and set the real fault out in a free written quote.
What we will not do at two in the morning
We will not put anybody on a wet pitched roof in a high wind to sheet it over. Slate in the rain is as slippery as it gets, and the wind that lifted the tiles has not gone anywhere. If we cannot get safe access Dave says so on the phone and comes as soon as it is workable. We also will not run mastic along a failed lead flashing and leave it. It looks fixed, it lets go inside a year, and the water is in the wall all that time.

What comes off first round here
On the Victorian terraces through Swinton, Pendlebury and Salford the covering is Welsh slate a century old, and the nails are the weak point rather than the slate. Once they have rusted through, slates come away in batches in the first proper gale and leave a hole onto the felt. On the 1930s semis off Bolton Road and Moorside Road the mortar goes first: bedded ridge cracks its full length, a ridge tile lifts, the felt beneath it tears. Access decides the rest, and a terraced street with no front garden needs a pavement scaffold licence, which is days rather than hours.
