What we do, and what we do not
You supply the lights. We fit them to the outside of the building: along the guttering or the fascia, up the gable, round the front door and windows, across a shopfront. When the season is over we come back in January and take them down, so nobody in the house is up a ladder in the cold in the new year either. We do not supply or sell lights. We do not fit outdoor sockets or timers, and we do not do any wiring. Boardman is a roofing firm, not an electrician. If you want an outdoor socket, get a qualified electrician in before the lights go up, not after.
Why ask a roofer to put your lights up
Most of what makes Christmas lights awkward is the height, not the lights. The roofline is the part worth leaving to someone with the right access equipment, and HSE publishes ladder guidance for a reason: a ladder on a wet drive in December is not the place to learn. The other thing a roofer does is look at the roofline while he is up there. A gutter bracket that has dropped, a fascia board that has gone soft, a joint that drips every time it rains: those are the jobs we do the rest of the year, so we notice them. If something wants attention we will tell you, and it goes in writing like anything else. Whether you want it doing is your decision, and it has nothing to do with the lights.
Lights on houses
On a house the usual job is a run along the front guttering or fascia, the gable end, and round the door and the front windows. Some people want the whole front outlined, some want one straight run and nothing else. Either is fine. Tell us what you have bought and where you want it to go. The easiest way is to message on WhatsApp with what is in the box and which parts of the house you want lit, and we can tell you what will work with the lights you have and the building you have before anybody comes out.
Shops, pubs and offices
Businesses want the frontage lit for the whole of December, which means the lights need to go up before trade gets busy and stay up through whatever the weather does. We fit lights to shopfronts, pub frontages and office buildings the same way as houses: your lights, fixed to your building, taken down in January. If you want lights at first floor height or above, say so when you ring, because it changes the access we bring. If the building is leased, check with your landlord before anything is fixed to the outside of it.

The January take down
Taking lights down is the half of the job nobody wants. It is cold, it is usually wet, and it comes just as everybody is back at work. We come back in January, take the lights down and hand them back to you, ready to go in the loft for next year. The take down is part of the job we quote for at the start, not something you have to chase up and book separately in the new year.
Getting your lights ready
Electrical Safety First publishes clear advice on Christmas lights and it is worth ten minutes before the day. In short: anything going outside must be made for outdoor use, marked with a water drop symbol or an IP code, where the last number is the protection against water and higher is better. Never put indoor lights outside. Get the sets out early and check them for damage, broken lamps and loose wires, and do not use a set if the cable or the plug is damaged. Buy from a reputable retailer rather than a third party seller online. Do not connect different sets together. The plugs and transformers should be plugged in indoors, even when the lights themselves are outdoor rated, and an RCD in your consumer unit protects you from a shock if there is a fault. Switch them off when you go to bed or go out.
