Stone slate is a different trade to clay tile
A Salford clay tile weighs a couple of kilos. A stone slate off a Spotland terrace can weigh twenty times that, and a full covering puts a serious load through the purlins and wall plates. So we survey from inside the loft first, reading the timber for sag, cracked rafter feet and old sistering somebody bodged in the eighties. Stone is laid to diminishing courses, each slate hung on a peg rather than nailed twice, so relaying means sorting the whole stack by size and thickness before anything goes back on. We will not relay stone slate onto rotting timber laths; we replace soft wood first.
Matching the stone on a Rochdale roof
The hard part of a repair here is sourcing, not fixing. The gritstone came out of local delves that closed generations ago, so matching material is reclaimed. On a partial strip, sound slate may be moved from a less visible elevation and matching material used there. Dave will explain whether a suitable match is available before work is booked.

Exposure and the elevations that fail first
This town takes weather off the moors that Salford does not. On west facing elevations up around Bamford, Norden and Healey Dell the rain arrives horizontally and gets behind anything poorly dressed.
