Two kinds of roof in one M32 postcode
The A56 Chester Road is roughly the dividing line. North and east of it, towards Gorse Hill Park and the Great Stone, houses were slated in Welsh slate on sawn softwood battens, with lead lined valleys where one terrace meets the next. South and west, towards Victoria Park off Derbyshire Lane and out to Lostock, it is 1920s and 1930s semis in interlocking concrete tile, with sand and cement bedded ridges and cement fillets instead of lead. Same street, same rain, entirely different failure.
Gorse Hill terraces and the valley that goes first
On the streets off Chester Road running up towards Trafford Park, the leak is nearly always the valley or the chimney rather than the open slope. Original valley lead is thin code four, and after a hundred and twenty winters it splits along the centre line where water stands. The sign is a damp patch on a back bedroom ceiling, a metre in from the party wall. We strip the slates either side, lay a new valley board and dress in new lead in two pieces.

Stretford semis around Longford Park and Humphrey Park
Longford Park is the biggest park in Trafford, and the housing ringing it guides what we find across southern M32. Out here the ridge and hip mortar is the weak point. It was bedded wet, it has had ninety years of freeze and thaw, and it crumbles out until a gust lifts a ridge tile clean off. Left alone the ridge board soaks and you lose the top of the roof. A strip and re-bed on a three bed semi prices on the length of ridge and hip, whether the ridge board underneath has soaked and needs renewing, and whether a tower will reach it or the job wants a scaffold.
